Superpower Empire: China 1912 is a TL written by Hendryk in which the POD is the early death of Yuan Shikai in 1912 (instead of 1916 as was the case in OTL). Yuan had just taken over the position of provisional President of the Republic of China, following the overthrow of the Qing dynasty.
As a successor to Yuan, reformist Kang Youwei is chosen as a compromise between the various political factions. Kang reorganizes China’s institutions along neo-Imperial lines, drawing inspiration from Wilhelmine Germany and Meiji Japan. China gradually begins to reverse its century-long decline, and over the course of the following decades rises again to major power status.
Three versions of the TL exist. Version 1.0, started in 2004, is no longer considered canonical. Version 2.0, posted in the Timelines and Scenarios forum, is the current canon unless contradicted by and until completion of Version 3.0. In a break with tradition, Version 3.0 is written in a thematic rather than a chronological way; its first chapters focus on the history of aviation in Qian China.
This TL earned the 2006 Turtledove Award for Best Early Twentieth Century TL.
Tales of the Superpower Empire is a spin-off series based on this TL that can be read in the Writer’s Forum. Twenty-nine episodes have been written to date. The series has earned the 2006 and 2007 Turtledove Awards for Best Historical Fiction.
